St. Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon, Portugal as Fernando Martins de Bulhões in a wealthy and noble family of Bulhões.

At the age of 15, he entered the St. Augustine religious order (Canons of the Holy Cross) at the Abbey of St. Vincent on the outskirts of Lisbon.

At the age of 17, he moved to the HQ (Monastery of the Holy Cross) in Coimbra, capital of Portugal. Far from his hometown, he dedicated his 9 years of life to focus on his prayer life and his studies. He was ordained priest before he turned 19 years old.

While serving at the monastery, he met some Franciscan Friars that settled at the St. Anthony the Great Hermitage outside of Coimbra and was attracted to their simple and evangelical lifestyle. The order was established 11 years prior. St. Francis of Assisi was still alive at this time.

Some of their Friars were preaching about Christ at the mosques in Spain. Despite all warnings, they continued in Morocco and were tortured and beheaded there. The bodies of the first five Franciscan martyrs were returned to Portugal and were buried at the monastery where young Fernando lived.
While others viewed this event as tragic, young Fernando deemed it as glorious and was inspired by it. He wanted to pursue the Franciscans’ efforts in Morocco.

After some thoughts, he made a momentous decision to join the Franciscan Order.

He asked permission to leave the St. Augustine Order and after facing many challenges from the senior Augustinians, he was allowed to leave and promptly joined the Franciscan Order. He assumed the name of Anthony in honor of the patriarch of hermitage (St. Anthony the Great), by which he was to be known.

St. Anthony surely has a twisted fate. While he was evangelizing and intending for martyr in Morocco, he fell ill and made voyage to return back to Portugal.

But he ended up in Northern Italy where he has made an unplanned sermon in one occasion at the convent where he was staying and his talent in preaching was realized by chance and noticed by St. Francis of Assisi, the founder of his order.

St. Francis then assigned him to become teacher for his fellow Friars and lead the public preaching. He permanently resided in the city of Padua, Northern Italy.

Written record stated that he had made around 400 trips between Italy and France for his public preaching.
There was legend where he preached at the shoreline and the fishes emerged to listen to his words.

    𝗠𝗜𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗦
Stories of miracles attributed to St. Anthony occurred both in his lifetime and also after his death through the intercession prayers of the faithfuls.
He is popular as patronage of lost item due to a story when his Psalm book was stolen by a fellow Friar, but due to his diligent prayers, the Friar then repented and returned the book to him.
There was also story about a drowned child brought back to life through intercession prayer by the child’s mother to St. Anthony.

St. Anthony suffered from fungus infected disease (Ergotism) and died at the Monastery of Poor Clare of Assisi, in Arcella, Padua. He was 35 years old.

He was canonized as Saint in less than a year after his death due to several miracles during his life and after his death. In 1946, Pope Pius XII officially declared St. Anthony a doctor of the church.

Note: A doctor of the church is a person whose teaching on faith has been deemed sound and of benefit to the church through their writing, study, or research.
