Feast Day:
~ November 13 (celebrated in USA, since 1961 to date)
~ December 22 (elsewhere)
* In the Roman Martyrology, her feast day is December 22, the anniversary of her death, the day ordinarily chosen as a saint's feast day. Following the reforms in Pope John XXIII's Code of Rubrics, the United States since 1961 has celebrated Cabrini's feast on November 13, the anniversary of her beatification, to avoid conflicting with the greater ferias of Advent.
** Simple definition of feria of the Roman Catholic Church calendar (referring to a weekday in the time of Advent or Lent) which must be celebrated and has precedence over that of simple feasts. Example being Ash Wednesday.

Pain, the bitter fruit of hardship and suffering, is what makes man who he is; man. However, there is another kind of labour that can produce even greater pain: love. It is a pursuit so powerful that it sometimes escapes even the confines of reason, and its sting can only be felt in the aftermath - often when we believed ourselves impervious to any hurt.
Yet pain, even in its ugliest manifestation, holds a certain mysterious attraction that leads to the maturation of faith. And God understood this more than we can ever could.
Just like the scene at Eden may seem avoidable now, back then it was necessary. Because despite the setbacks, it showed God's mercy alongside His justice; He knew we would seek Him after losing His favour. For, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” - St. Augustine, Confessions.
Yet, that endeavour, even when it was a gamble on His side, it will taught us better than any other method ever could have - through our mistakes, tribulations and agonies.
This feature about Mother Cabrini does not focus on her successes, made in the name of her Beloved, but rather serves as a pit-stop where we can take a moment, step back and see how even those considered elect failed at love…
𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐚: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠.
In Ronald Blake's book, 'The Trial of Mother Cabrini, The First American Saint', a section is dedicated to the events that unfolded in Nicaragua. After reading it, my heart was so burdened as I get her experiences and where she was coming from. While it may have been possible to avoid such a distressing scene, I cannot say for certain as I was not in that moment nor did I witness what she saw.
Nevertheless, the damage was done and valuable lessons were learned through tears and heartache.
Since the book can still be bought online, and out of respect for the author, I will briefly share what transpired (with minor edits) during the canonization proceedings of this valiant nun who not only stood resolute in her convictions, but by God's benevolance, was allowed to taste the bitterness from the chalice of love.

“Was it right for her to ask a man, a total stranger, for so much money? I know she was asking for a great deal of financial aid.” said Riondo. He meant to drive the point home.
“It went deeper than that.” The Cardinal replied while looking directly at him.
“Deeper?” Riondo questioned.
Cardinal Lavaro tried to explained. “At that moment the hospital meant nothing to her. She knew that a wall of hate and bigotry could grow. If enough walls took root, no one would have a future.”
“That’s an excuse, because she built walls of her own. It was for power. She never hesitated to mold lives.” Riondo paused a moment.
“The Italian immigrants were confused,” the Cardinal declared, “they depended on her courage. They needed it and wherever they went, she followed. But never for power. She only moved from problem to problem."
Raising his voice to become more emphatic, he concluded, “Intolerance and injustice were her biggest problems. In her thinking, she and the Church were synonymous.”
“That isn’t true, and the events in Nicaragua proves the Church and Francesca Cabrini were never synonymous.”
Riondo was adamant. “The Nicaragua event had some hard-after shocks. I believe she refused to let the three daughters of a very wealthy patron of that city enter the school, which she has established. Do you know about that among other things?” Riondo was demanding.
“Mother Cabrini had some very strict rules about marriage. She believed that all parents should have been through the ceremony. She wanted everyone of the Ten Commandments obeyed.” The Cardinal spoke gently, but with a definite empathy. “Morality was one of her strong points and she obeyed this rule in all of her affairs. Yes, she did refuse to enroll the illegitimate daughters of this man in Nicaragua. However, later she did admit the girls as her belief was that there are only illegitimate parents, not children.”
[As] Riondo listened to this narration, standing with his hands on the back of his chair, his mind in deep thought.
Cardinal Lavaro continued, “Before accepting Francesca Cabrini’s request regarding her Sainthood, I spent long hours searching for an explanation for her behaviour in Nicaragua. She was wrong.”
“Nothing can erase that sin.” Riondo quickly interjected.
The Cardinal went right on with his narration. “Nicaragua must be accepted for what it was; a severe testing ground.” In deep study, he walked a few feet, facing the others at the council and continued, “Francesca wasn’t an ordinary person. She was someone special, very special. She was potentially great, yet, how great? How great was the unknown factor. In Nicaragua she has reached the pinnacle of her life. She was proud of her accomplishments. She was in a measure, satisfied. So, an obstacle was placed in her way, and for the first time in her life, she reacted with narrowness. She didn’t know it, but it had been pre-destined if she were to sit with God. She not only had to make, but to understand this one mistake. She was at the crossroads that challenged the tremendous depth of the woman.”
Continuing his narration, Cardinal Lavaro explained. “The very roots of her life were ripped apart. In desperation she returned to her school in Italy. The test grew more severe. With each passing day her darkness grew. The weeks became months and it appeared that Francesca Cabrini had failed in her greatest test.”

When God created the world, He deemed it all to be good. Even when Adam and Eve were formed, their initial desire - the yearning for knowledge - was pure. However, misery always seeks companionship. So Satan, being who he is, seeks to distort everything that God has intended. He understood that in order to afflict the Almighty One, he must first harm His beloved creation: us.
Thusly does this war rage on from Heaven's realm down to our temporary and unstable world. The question had been posed and damage had been done; yet did God abandon humanity's forebears to their own ruinous path? No – it could not be so! For Love is the very core of His Being. For LOVE HE IS.
Indeed there exists both pain and fulfillment when one draws near unto the Author of Hearts; but for those who are destined to dwell with Him eternally, how much more important it becomes that they learn this lesson intimately and live by its teachings!
May Mother Cabrini's failed test-ground serve as a reminder for us all: let our eyes and hearts remain fixed solely upon trusting GOD rather than relying on our own fallible understanding or experiences whenever we find ourselves standing at life's crossroads. For, did He not tell us Himself that "unless you change your ways and become like little children...you will never enter into the Kingdom of Heaven" [Matthew 18:3]?
As we approached, Christmas, the most captivating and heart-rendering celebration humanity has ever experienced, may the Holy Family reminds us that God Himself is worth every pain, every tear and every heartache. Not because of who we are or what we have become. But because of who HE IS.
And as we gather with loved ones to exchange gifts and share meals, let us take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ - and be filled with gratitude for all that He has done for us. May His love guide us through this season and throughout our lives.

SUMMARY
✝️𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡✝️
𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
Saint Frances Cabrini is known as the “Mother of Emigrants” due to her work to keep the faith alive among Christians far from home. She is a missionary among the Italian immigrants in America. She is the patron saint for migrants, immigrants, emigrants, hospital administrators, and impossible causes.
𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗟𝗬 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘
Saint Frances was born as Maria Francesca Cabrini, and she was the youngest among 13 children. Her parents are Agostino Cabrini and Stella Oldini and they are farmers. Unfortunately, of the 13 children, only four of them survived beyond adolescence, including Saint Frances herself. She was born two months premature, thus she would live most of her life in a fragile and delicate state of health.
In her early childhood, she was inspired and dedicated to living a life for religious work. Fascinated by the stories of mission-arise, she made up her mind to join a religious order. Being born and raised in Italy, she had a dream that one day, she would be able to be a missionary and send to China to continue her mission. When she was a child, she would make little boats of paper, and drop flowers into the boat, where the flowers represent the missionaries and she would launch them to sail off to China.
𝗝𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘
Following her dream when she was a child; to join a religious order and become a missionary, she started by entering a convent education at a school run by the Daughters of the Sacred Heart. She graduated with high honours and got a teaching certificate. Then, at the age of 18, she applied for admission to the religious congregation of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart, but unfortunately, she was turned down due to her poor health condition.
One day, a friendly priest, guessing at her inner strength, appealed to his Bishop, and invited her to manage the House of Providence Orphanage in Cadagono, Italy. She taught at the school, remained there until the house closed and drew a small community of women to live a religious way of life. They started classes in needlework and sold their embroidery to earn a little more money to support the place.
In 1877, she made her vows there and took the religious habit. She became Mother Cabrini and she added Xavier to her name to honour the Jesuit saint, Francis Xavier, who is the patron saint of missionary service. She hopes to follow in Saint Francis Xavier's footsteps as a missionary either in China or Japan.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝗦𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦
The Bishop encouraged Saint Frances to start her missionary congregation. What she does is, she started by gathering seven women who had worked with her at Codogno and founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, dedicated to the education of Christian girls. The congregation keep on developing, starting from Italy and to other countries. In its first five years, the congregation established seven homes and a free school, together with the nursery.
Saint Frances's heart always wanted to work in China, but it seems that God wants her to go to the United States. During that time, the United States was becoming flooded with millions of poor Italian immigrants who needed her help. Pope Leo XIII had advised her, “Not to the East, but the West.”
𝗢𝗣𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗘𝗗
What happened in the United States? As often happens with immigrant groups, the Italians were simultaneously accepted and despised in the United States. They were welcomed and accepted as cheap and willing laborers; where women and girls worked in mills and factories, while men and boys worked on docks and construction sites. They were rejected and despised due to the language barrier, they spoke little or no English, and many were desperately poor. Even the country’s Catholic Church needs help on this matter, especially in celebrating Mass or other gatherings and fellowship.
On March 31, 1889, Saint Frances arrived in New York City along with the other sisters ready to begin her new journey. She felt disappointed as when she arrived, the house intended to be her first orphanage in the United States was not available. Archbishop Michael Corrigan, the Archbishop of New York advised her to return to Italy, but Saint Frances, a truly valiant woman, stood up (she was just five feet tall), and said, “I have letters from the Pope. I’m staying.” And she did. The Archbishop found the housing with the convent of Sisters of Charity.
𝗦𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡
They stayed and started to open more orphanages and schools in New York. She has received permission to found an orphanage which is now known as Saint Cabrini Home. She founded schools in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, and in New Orleans. Over the following years, her mission spread to Italy, Costa Rica, Panama, Chile, Brazil, France and England. In total, Saint Frances founded 67 institutions including orphanages, schools, and hospitals; and she named all of them after her favourite Italian hero, Christopher Columbus. Her proudest achievement was in opening the Columbus Hospital in New York.
Saint Frances, despite the hardships she faced, always put her trust in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She will always say, “Everything is in Jesus’ hands, not us. Surrender to Him.” She will always be able to find people who will donate their money, time and support for her institutions.
When her Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart were approved in 1907, there were 1000 members in eight countries, and they served orphans, schools, prisons and hospitals.
𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗛
Saint Frances passed at the age of 67, due to malaria in her own Columbus Hospital in Chicago. Her body was originally placed at the Saint Cabrini Home, but was exhumed in 1931 as part of her canonization process. Her head is preserved in Rome at the chapel of the congregation’s international motherhouse, one of her arms is at the national shrine in Chicago, and the rest of the body at a shrine in New York.
Saint Frances was beatified on November 13, 1938 by Pope Pius XI and canonized on July 7, 1946 by Pope Pius XII.
𝗔𝗗𝗗𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗜𝗡𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
In 1909, Saint Frances became a naturalized citizen of the United States, and the United States celebrates her Feast Day on November 13. The reason for the United States to choose November 13, which is also Saint Frances's beatification anniversary, is to avoid conflicting with the greater ferias of Advent.
There are two miracles attributed to Saint Frances. The first one, where she restored sight to a child who was believed to have been blinded by excess silver nitrate, while the second one, when she healed a terminally ill member of her congregation.

𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗝𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗡 𝗛𝗜𝗗𝗨𝗣
𝗞𝗘𝗟𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗚𝗔 𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗦
𝗞𝗘𝗪𝗔𝗙𝗔𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗬𝗔
